The ‘notch’ is referred to as a thread pitch. A basic distinction is made between internal threads and external threads. Suitable clamping screws can be screwed into an internal thread, which generate their holding force through the principle of the inclined plane.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”3_5,2_5″ module_class=”gue-row-vertical-aligned-content gue-row-2col-image-text” _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”3_5″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/GUE_herstellung-gewinde.jpg” alt=”Gühring tool for producing internal and external threads on a textured metal surface” title_text=”Gühring tool for producing internal and external threads on a textured metal surface” _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”2_5″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.6″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Where are threads used?

The main use of threads is to connect two objects together or to convert a rotational movement into an axial movement. The basic principle of detachable connections is used wherever components need to be joined together, for example in the automotive, aircraft, mechanical engineering, energy technology and also in numerous everyday objects.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row module_class=”gue-row-text” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Standard threads, fine metric threads and trapezoidal threads

The most widely used thread types in Europe are metric ISO threads, also known as standard, normal or tapered threads. These have a profile form in which the outer edges converge in a wedge shape. Metric fine threads have the same structure as metric standard threads. The difference lies in a narrower and less deeply cut thread profile. Due to the smaller pitch, the fine thread can transmit more tensile force than the standard thread. The fine thread is usually used when there is little space available – for example, for adjusting screws in measuring devices. In a trapezoidal thread, the profile of the thread flanks has the shape of an isosceles trapezoid. In addition, the thread flanks of a trapezoidal thread are thicker and the pitch dimensions are larger, which means that greater axial forces can be transmitted. Trapezoidal threads are therefore used where movements are transmitted, for example in lathes.

There are also two thread types: right-hand thread and left-hand thread. With a right-hand thread, the screw is screwed in clockwise. Most people are right-handed and, for ergonomic reasons, need to exert less force with a right-hand thread. This is why this thread type is preferred. Left-hand threads, on the other hand, are only used in special cases.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.24.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.24.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text module_class=”gue-row-text-module” _builder_version=”4.27.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Did you know?
Three fun facts about thread production

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_toggle title=”Fun fact 1: Who invented the thread?” _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

The principle of threads was already known in ancient times and was used for screw and spiral constructions. The first known records of threading tools date back to Leonardo da Vinci in the 16th century. But back then, every thread was unique. As a result, the Whitworth thread quickly spread throughout Europe and remains one of the best-known thread standards to this day.

[/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=”Fun fact 2: Why is an internal thread called a ‘nut’?” _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

The counterpart to a screw with an internal thread is also called a nut. Here are examples of three common metric standard threads:

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.25.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Tap M2

Tap M4

Tap M10

Thread size

M2

M4

M10

Core hole diameter

1.6 mm

3.3 mm

8.5 mm

Pitch standard thread

0.40 mm

0.70 mm

1.50 mm

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row module_class=”gue-row-text” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.25.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.25.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Drill the core hole using a twist drill on a drill press or handheld drill. The oil grooves are located on the outer circumference of the tool. There are fluteless taps with and without oil grooves. The oil content in the emulsion is also crucial for efficient lubrication, cooling and tool life during fluteless tapping. The selection and control of the oil content influence the surface quality of the machined thread.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row module_class=”gue-row-text” _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Tool materials
HSS-E or solid carbide?

High speed steel (HSS-E or PM HSS-E) is the ideal tool material for smaller series and flexible manufacturing. Tools made from HSS-E and PM HSS-E offer the best price-performance ratio. Carbide (solid carbide) is the best choice of tool material for large-scale manufacturing. The higher acquisition costs of tools made of solid carbide are quickly amortised due to the low machine downtimes and shorter cycle times. Since fluteless taps do not use sharp, break-sensitive cutting edges, but rather rounded polygons, fluteless taps made of solid carbide achieve much longer tool lives compared to the tool material HSS-E.

Can’t find the right fluteless tap in our wide range of tools? This means that the same cutting tools can mill different thread sizes with the same pitch but different nominal diameters. The same tool can also mill right-hand and left-hand threads. This produces only very short chips, which promotes high process reliability. You also only need one tool for machining through- and blind holes. The same tool geometry can be used for a wide range of materials, from soft to high-strength.
