Tungsten carbide gives carbide its extremely high hardness and makes the material resistant to wear. At around 1,380 \u00b0C, the cobalt melts and flows into the spaces between the tungsten carbide grains. Sintering gives the material its final strength and hardness because the metal particles are compacted into a solid, dense material with high density.
