The features in detail
Smooth surfaces prevent built-up edges
To prevent material from sticking to the drill cutting edges during drilling, Gühring relies on particularly smooth tool surfaces for the twist drill RT 100 InoxPro. Polished flutes and the best surface quality in the web thinning improve the chip removal and minimise built-up edge formation. As a result, we guarantee a very high process reliability in drilling depths up to 7xD. In addition, the tool is coated with Gühring’s own Perrox coating, which is particularly smooth and offers very high wear protection.
New geometry to prevent jamming
Gühring has also specially adapted its carbide substrate for machining INOX materials: an improved combination of hardness and toughness of the cutting material means that the cutting edge does not break out even under high loads. A new drill geometry serves the same purpose: the optimised, crescent-shaped cutting edge and the stronger taper of the tool minimise the tendency to jam in stainless steel.
The premium quality of the cutting edges ensures greater wear resistance and consistency. Initial tests have shown that the wear on this twist drill is up to three times lower than on comparable tools from market competitors. “All this adds up to a precision tool for maximum performance in the INOX field,” explains Markus Kraus, product manager for drilling tools at Gühring.
How is the product portfolio structured?
The RT 100 InoxPro is available as a complete product family of solid carbide in the diameter length ratios 3xD, 5xD and 7xD. The dimensions range from Ø 3 mm to 20 mm. The precision tools are designed with a HA-shank for the holder in hydraulic chucks and shrink chucks.

Challenges in INOX machining
INOX materials are popular in many industries, but in machining they exhibit some tricky properties.
Unlike machining conventional steel, stainless steel machining generates very high temperatures, which reduce the life of the tools. In addition, the material tends to jam, which means that it contracts during drilling, causing drill bits to frequently jam and break in the hole. Another property of high-grade steel also contributes to tool wear: the material often sticks to the cutting edges during drilling. If this baked-on material comes loose during the drilling process, parts of the cutting edges can break off.
For all these reasons, a material specialist should definitely be used for drilling in INOX materials. However, the performance of conventional INOX drills is rarely at the highest level. Gühring is closing this gap with a special tool made of solid carbide, which has been presented for the first time at EMO 2023: the RT 100 InoxPro twist drill. The solid carbide drill was specially designed for the production of precise holes in stainless steels, high-grade steels and titanium materials and promises the highest cutting data and long tool lives.

More InformationThe fact that significantly higher feed rates are possible in INOX materials with the RT 100 InoxPro is shown by a practical example in which the Gühring drill was tested against the high-performance INOX drill of a competitor. The result: thanks to the higher feed rate, the machining time per component was 25 per cent shorter than with the competitor’s drill and with the same tool life.
