Deep hole drills

The right drill for every task

The process is referred to as deep hole drilling when the diameter-length ratio is 15xD or greater. Deep hole drills are used in the machining of drive shafts, injectors, drill rods in oil production, in the medical sector, in mould making and in the food industry. Depending on the machine specifications, the hole requirements, the lot size and the hole depth, Gühring determines the most effective tool option.

Two-fluted deep hole drills

Drilling with depth accuracy

Gühring’s two-fluted deep hole drills ensure precise, deep holes with a consistent diameter. In addition, two-fluted deep hole drills generally allow for higher feed rates than single-fluted deep hole drills.

Spiral deep hole drills

Spiralised chips

The highest feed rates and cutting speeds are only possible if a safe chip removal is ensured. The spiral deep hole drill RT 100 T achieves this. The video shows the solid carbide drill in action when machining a crankshaft.

More Information

Problem-free chips

The spiral deep hole drills feature a special flute geometry that ensures optimum chip removal from the hole. In order to optimally supply the cutting edge with coolant, the tools have coolant ducts with a maximum cross-section. This ensures an effective supply of coolant to the cutting edge as well as an excellent chip removal. These factors — in combination with cutting parameters perfectly matched to the application — result in chips that are easily removed even from deep holes. This effectively prevents chip jam and the associated jamming of the tool.

More Information

Two tools, one power technology: with the four-fluted deep hole drill VB80 and the four-fluted drill VB100, which are used for drilling, pilot holes and step drilling, Gühring is revolutionising the machining of castings. Compared to conventional drilling processes, at least twice the speed is possible here. For the machinist, this means significant cycle time savings of several minutes and massive increases in capacity.

High-performance in casting
Deep holes need to be drilled in cast engine blocks and cylinder heads. Using conventional methods, these drilling operations are time-consuming and therefore expensive. A new tool solution is needed here, with a customised geometry and inherent stability that absorbs the forces during the machining and keeps them as low as possible. Gühring has developed such a solution in collaboration with a customer.
